Unit information
Completing a postgraduate dissertation gives you a real sense of what life as an academic is like. It also signals to employers that you have highly developed research, critical thinking and communication skills.
In this unit, you will conduct a detailed investigation into your choice of topic in the field of economics, subject to approval from an academic supervisor.
You will extend your capacity for independent thought and critical evaluation by undertaking a supervised program of reading, research, data collection and analysis.
The culmination of your work will be a dissertation (up to 20,000 words long) and seminar in which you will present your findings conclusions and recommendations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- identify an appropriate economic enquiry for investigation;
- investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories in relation to an economic issue;
- critically review literature and identify and collect data for their research;
- interpret research findings and report these in a clear and coherent format; and
- exercise critical thinking and judgement to arrive at conclusions and policy recommendations.
