Unit information
Are you interested in Australia’s unique and diverse animals? This flexibly delivered unit introduces you to the ecology and management of wildlife, including native and introduced species of freshwater fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
Focusing on Australasian fauna, you will explore impacts of human (anthropogenic) land use that have affected our wildlife. You will also explore the theory and applications of modern methods employed to manage wildlife, honing practical skills that will help you to stand out in your career.
With four major themes, the unit offers you a well-rounded understanding of: the ecology of Australasian wildlife; the human dimension of wildlife management; wildlife hunting, harvesting and culling; and disease in wildlife management.
Guided by industry-recognised experts, you will be equipped to respond to the challenges and opportunities of wildlife management in the real world.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of the ecology of Australasian wildlife species; the communities they form and the natural factors that influence them;
- use appropriate analytical tools and survey methods of wildlife ecology and management (such as population estimation, survey design and implementation) effectively;
- demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of how and why human activities have impacts upon wildlife communities, and apply that understanding to wildlife management problems and situations; and
- communicate, using verbal and written forms, a broad and coherent understanding of the general themes of wildlife ecology and management such as pest management, disease, harvest and human dimensions, in the context of Australasian wildlife.
