Unit information
Australia’s sheep industry is a critical contributor to the economy, with meat and wool exports worth billions of dollars annually.
Build your skills and knowledge to manage for-profit sheep enterprises, as demand for Australia’s sheep products continues to grow domestically and internationally.
Studying this unit, you will explore 12 topics of key importance to the industry.
These include practical management of sheep (weaner and adult), reproduction, pregnancy and lamb production, pastures, farms and sustainable land and water use.
You will also be equipped with skills to apply contemporary business strategies, building your knowledge of marketing of sheep and sheep meats, economics of sheep production, benchmarking and key profit drivers, use of discounted cash flow analysis, managing risk and understanding relevant legal issues and regulations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge in the management of a sheep enterprise in Australia aiming for profit;
- analyse, evaluate and generate a solution to optimise the timing of various husbandry operations;
- analyse and evaluate information in order to make resource allocation decisions in the sheep enterprise;
- analyse, evaluate and transmit knowledge to others about the impact of risks on decisions by sheep producers and demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge in managing these risks; and
- demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of the legal and regulatory environment in which sheep producers operate.
