Unit information
In both production settings and the natural environment, Australian and global animal populations are vulnerable to threats from disease.
This unit explores the significant impacts of disease in animals within different animal industries or systems.
Examining key disease processes, the unit introduces you to investigation and control principles, and regulatory aspects of disease control.
You will learn about the biology of gastrointestinal parasites and principles of control, focusing on grazing animals.
Next you will gain in-depth knowledge of the major diseases and health management principles of sheep, chickens, pigs, dogs, horses, Australian native animals, and grazing, feedlot beef and dairy cattle.
During the intensive school, you will gain practical insights into animal health and disease management through field visits to livestock enterprises and hands-on laboratory sessions in microbiology and parasitology. You may also engage in problem-based disease-solving exercises to apply your knowledge to real-world animal health scenarios.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- present an advanced and expert integrated understanding of the major health problems in farm animals, dogs, horses and Australian wildlife;
- present an advanced and expert integrated understanding of the impact of animal diseases in a biological and economic sense;
- present an advanced and expert integrated understanding in the integrated control of disease in the different animal species, and the role of good husbandry in maintaining good animal health;
- recognise, analyse critically, reflect on and apply specialised knowledge to animal disease problems;
- analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and communication these to others in written or verbal formats; and
- show an advanced knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to an aspect of the discipline.
