Unit information
We use and interact with animals in diverse contexts. This unit, consisting of four modules, provides you with a comprehensive understanding of key principles of animal function, health and reproduction. While there is some emphasis on livestock species, application to non-livestock and non-domestic mammalian and avian species are also included.
You will explore key concepts in animal health and reproduction in a range of animal systems, and the application of these concepts.
You will then focus on the principles of understanding and managing disease in animal populations. This will be supported by examples of the impacts, causes, treatment and control of specific animal diseases, including exotic and zoonotic diseases.
Finally, you will examine basic concepts in toxicology, developing transferrable knowledge of the pharmacology and toxicology of the major chemical groups used in agriculture and the major intoxications seen in animals.

The School of Environmental and Rural Science considers all practical/laboratory/tutorial activities as essential to student learning. Attendance and participation in all practical/laboratory/tutorial classes (sessions) is mandatory - exemptions will not be granted without supporting evidence.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate broad and coherent theoretical knowledge of the practical aspects of reproduction in animals, the immunology, epidemiology and management of infectious and non-infectious diseases of animals and the general principles of toxicology as applied to animals;
- demonstrate, through research and written or verbal presentation a deep understanding of specific topics within the overall unit;
- use critical analysis to properly evaluate the importance of the different aspects of applied reproduction, immunology, epidemiology, infectious disease, non-infectious disease and toxicology; and;
- demonstrate autonomy and judgement in written and oral assessment tasks.
