Unit information
This unit explores the key methodologies and theories relevant to legal research at a postgraduate level. That research may be traditional legal as well as interdisciplinary research. You will undertake a major research project and will also critically examine the work of others.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- based on a highly developed understanding of the scholarship of law, demonstrate an advanced ability to intellectually engage in an in-depth discussion of complex issues applying a range of theories;
- use well-developed cognitive and creative skills to identify a research topic and question and undertake a review that analyses, consolidates and synthesises knowledge;
- use cognitive and creative skills to exercise reflective and critical thinking, and professional judgement, in demonstrating an understanding of how complex interdisciplinary knowledge and sociological methodologies may inform a discussion of the effectiveness of law in society;
- demonstrate creativity and initiative to an advanced ability to conceive, plan and implement a program of legal research; and apply a range of methods and technologies to critically analyse and evaluate information;
- demonstrate an ability to act autonomously to present a clear and coherent exposition of knowledge and ideas in a thesis that has been the subject of refinement and reflection, and which applies legal research and legal reasoning, together with evidence of novel or independent thought; and
- reflect on the social and ethical responsibilities associated with reporting on legal research, both related to textual analysis and empirical studies, and ensure that all findings are presented with integrity.
