Advanced Standing

Candidates admitted under Rule (a) may be granted advanced standing for a maximum of 48 credit points of coursework units. In accordance with the course accreditation standards, students may only be given credit for coursework that is strictly equivalent to coursework in the current course.

Candidates admitted under Rule (b) shall be granted a maximum of 36 credit points of coursework units for PSYC503, PSYC504, PSYC505, PSYC506, PSYC507 and PSYC512 and 12 credit points for PSYC534, on the basis of having completed PSYC533.

Candidates admitted under Rule (c) shall be granted advanced standing for the PSYC534 placement unit on the basis of holding General Registration. A further 36 credit points of advanced standing may be granted for coursework units. In accordance with the course accreditation standards, students may only be given credit for coursework that is strictly equivalent to coursework in the current course.

Except where permitted for candidates admitted under Rule (c) above, advanced standing will not be granted for the four Clinical Psychology Placement units (PSYC513, PSYC514, PSYC534, PSYC535). Advanced standing will not be granted for research experience or employment experience prior to entry into the course.

Enrolment and Progression

  • Rule (c) pathway for Psychologists with General Registration proposed. This proposed change aligns with the 2019 Australian Psychology Accreditation Council standards for Psychology training, enabling Registered Psychologists to engage in specialist training towards endorsement as a Clinical Psychologist.

Advanced Standing

  • Candidates admitted under Rule (c) shall be granted advanced standing for the PSYC523 placement unit on the basis of holding General Registration. A further 42 credit points of advanced standing may be granted for coursework units. In accordance with the course accreditation standards, students may only be given credit for coursework that is strictly equivalent to coursework in the current course.

Professional Placement

  • For candidates admitted to the Master of Psychology (Clinical) under Rule (a) or Rule (b), one of the three periods of practical work shall be completed (at a minimum of 300 hours/20 weeks) in the UNE Psychology Clinic of the School of Psychology. The remaining practica may be completed outside the University.
  • For candidates admitted to the Master of Psychology (Clinical) under Rule (c), all practica shall be completed outside the University.

From 2019, students who articulate from the Master of Professional Psychology will no longer gain advanced standing for PSYC523 for any practicum experience undertaken in the Master of Professional Psychology unit PSYC531.

Admission to Candidature – Rule (b) – the bold text has been added

(b) hold an AQF Level 9 Master of Professional Psychology from the University of New England (or have completed all the units in that course except PSYC531) in addition to satisfying the requirements of Rule (a).

Advanced Standing – Rule (b)

  • Candidates admitted under Rule (b) shall be granted a maximum of 36 credit points of coursework units (previously 42 credit points)
  • PSYC523 has been deleted from the Advanced Standing

The following transitional rules will apply to students who apply to transfer to the second year of the Master of Psychology (Clinical) from the Master of Professional Psychology from 2019 onwards (including those submitting applications for transfer during 2018 calendar year).

(i) Students that have already transferred to the Master of Psychology (Clinical) in 2018 can retain the advanced standing that has been granted for PSYC523.

(ii) Students in the Master of Professional Psychology seeking transfer to the Master of Psychology (Clinical) should apply for transfer prior to enrolling in PSYC531 under the Master of Professional Psychology and will be required to complete PSYC523 under the Master of Psychology (Clinical) as their first clinical placement.

(iii) Students that will be seeking to transfer for 2019 but who have already completed PSYC531 under the Master of Professional Psychology (or are due to complete PSYC531 prior to 2019) will be required to complete PSYC523 in addition to PSYC531 as they will be transferring to the new 2019 rules, unless special approval is obtained from the Director of the Clinical Psychology program.
