The Master of Arts (MA) has been amended for 2022 as a result of the implementation of the Course Design Framework (CDF) across the University. Changes to the MA are in direct response to the larger course amendments in the Bachelor of Arts (BA), resulting from its restructuring to align with the CDF. In the school of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, many units are double-coded 300/500 to enable disciplines to offer both undergraduate and post-graduate coursework in the same subject. This double-coding means that changes to 300 level units in one degree, such as the BA, will affect most 500 level post-graduate coursework units. Given the BA has undergone significant changes, subsequent changes to the MA have been made.

Course Aim and Learning Outcomes

focus on providing students with the opportunity to develop and apply expert knowledge in a specific disciplinary field, with high-level discipline and generic skills including in research, analysis and communication.

To extend opportunities for disciplinary and interdisciplinary inquiry and advanced learning, five new majors are proposed under Rules (a), (b) and (c).

1. Ancient Greece: History and Culture
2. Ancient Rome: History and Culture

These majors are developed by collaboration across Ancient History and Classical Languages and Cultures, to clarify and consolidate language-related pathways of advanced study in ancient history.

1. Japanese Studies

Available in Rules (a), (b) and (c). NEW UNITS JAPN521 Exploring Japanese Language in Society and JAPN522 Japanese Through Language in Society: these 500-level units make it possible to offer Japanese Studies in the Master of Arts, where majors are already offered by five other disciplines of modern languages. The Japanese Studies major expands opportunities for language study at Masters level, encourages progression and provides an additional path to HDR.

1. Medieval and Modern European Studies

The design of this major extends opportunities for disciplinary learning in history. It provides a coherent pathway of historical study, with the European focus ensuring adequate depth of learning in a discipline field and breadth of study and learning. For Rule (a) the NEW UNIT HIST503 Witch Hunting 1400 – 1700 supports specialisation options at 500 level.

1. Water Sustainability

This major allows postgraduate coursework students to benefit from a pathway designed specifically to develop knowledge and skills for addressing water sustainability. Further, Australia's environment and broader society would benefit from graduates of the program, given the inter-disciplinary expertise, knowledge and skillsets gained and able to be deployed. Existing units offered by UNE, which align with research expertise in this area across the sciences and humanities (see for e.g. recent Routledge Water Policy publication), are selected and combined to complement the existing course structure and ensure that students gain a well-developed and holistic appreciation of water as a biophysical and geomorphological agent, as a life-support and resource, including its cultural and economic values, and of a wide range of approaches designed to ensure more sustainable management of this vital part of our environment, culture and economy.Current students may be able to complete under their current course rules and may enrol in the
