Albie's Rugby 2021 Wrap Up

After the bumper 2020 harvest season it was safe to say the rugby club had had one too many meat pies off the field and came back with a few more tight forwards than expected.

With little time to waste, the returner coaches had the fresher team ready to set the tone for the season. Led by skipper Chris Court, the boys had a great win against Robb getting up 22-0. The following weekend saw two fresh faced teams hit the park for the annual Armidale Knockout, the girls bringing home the biscuits with an outstanding fresher group leading the way from their first matches for Albies setting them up for a very strong season.

After a few years hiatus, we ventured west to Narrabri playing the Blue Boars under lights for the Southwell-Hannford Shield. We were taught a few lessons by Narrabri with them ending up victors 22-0. After a great evening of footy, the hospitality Narrabri was unreal with plenty of Albies old boys and families around, a special mention must be given to the Turner family for their instrumental role in starting the Shield again this year and we certainly look forward to playing against them next year.

With the disrupted pre-preseason due to floods on the coast, we were straight into the home and away season, with a cracking result in round 1 away against Tamworth -the first of many clean sweeps for 2021.

There were many highlights for the club in 2021 both outstanding personal achievements and team awards. First year’s Mark Green and Tink Morgan earnt selection in country teams for U19’s Men’s and Women’s opens team respectively. Both are exciting prospects for the club in the next few years.

Unfortunately, the season was cut short on the 7th of August despite all efforts to get underway again. At the conclusion of the 2021 season, Albies were declared minor premiers in all grades earning the club championship also, it was an outstanding achievement by everyone involved across all grades and all positions. Special mention to the deadly 3rd grade side who went through the season undefeated.

Safe to say it wasn’t the end to the season we were hoping for, although there is still plenty to celebrate and be thankful for. I would like to extend our thanks from the 2021 committee to all the sponsors, patrons, coaches, managers and supporters for your contribution to Albies Rugby in 2021. We would have loved to have a crack come finals time, but the club is in a great place to go on with it next year. Congratulations to the 2022 Rugby committee on your appointment.
