As we head into another academic year, we caught up with one of our soon-to-be first year students, Emily Taylor, who is getting ready to begin a Bachelor of Rural Science while living at St Albert's College.
Emily is the founder beef cattle stud, Eclipse Poll Herefords, and is excited to dive into the world of animal genetics and hopefully make a few friends along the way.
Here's what she had to say about starting at UNE this year:
How are you feeling ahead of your first trimester at UNE?
I am excited to begin studying my chosen course and to start furthering my knowledge and learning into a field which I am truly passionate about. I am also very excited to meet and form new friendships and connections with like-minded students.
What made you choose UNE?
I chose to study at UNE for a couple of reasons. The first being I feel that UNE is the premier university within Australia to study a Rural Science degree. I believe that there is an extra level of industry acceptance for those that have obtained degrees from UNE. Secondly, Armidale is close enough for me to return home from time to time and keep an eye on my 'Cows'.
What are you most looking forward to during Orientation?
I have been told by many ex-UNE students that their fondest memories are those made during O Week. This makes me feel excited to become part of the UNE and college community, and I look forward to meeting and getting to know new people from around the country, and hopefully also gain new friendships. I believe that it will be a week that will push me outside my comfort zone, but also a week of great times and even greater memories.
What do you love about agriculture and animal genetics?
The main reason why I love the agriculture industry is that it is such a broad and diverse industry that is developing and implementing new technologies on a consistent basis. Working within the agriculture industry is more than just a job; it is a way of life. It is an industry that has so many opportunities to give, it allows individuals to pursue their own pathways within the industry depending on their interests. Animal genetics is an area that I am extremely passionate about and cannot wait to explore further. Working with my own beef cattle stud, Eclipse Poll Herefords, I have seen how significant an animal’s genetic makeup can be. The improvements and gains that can be made through genetics are endless an I feel that it is an area that will have strong presence into the future.
