For many Australians, the decision to become a psychologist doesn't happen straight after school. It often comes after years spent raising a family, building a career, supporting others or looking for more meaningful work.
That reality is at the heart of the University of New England's (UNE) Master of Professional Psychology — the only fully online fifth-year psychology program in Australia, designed for people who need their study to fit around their life, not the other way around.
According to Course Coordinator Dr Hayley Farrell, the program has been deliberately designed to make postgraduate psychology study accessible to students regardless of where they live in Australia.
"We are the only university that offers this course fully online, which means students can pursue their psychology career from wherever they call home — whether that's a capital city, a regional town, or somewhere far more remote," Hayley said.
The accredited fifth-year qualification forms part of the psychology 5+1 pathway, allowing graduates to progress towards general registration as a psychologist through an additional one-year internship and the National Psychology Exam.

What is the 5+1 psychology pathway?
The 5+1 model is one of the most popular routes to becoming a registered psychologist in Australia:
- Complete an APAC-accredited four-year psychology sequence (including Honours or equivalent)
- Gain provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia
- Complete the Master of Professional Psychology (Year 5)
- Undertake a one-year supervised internship (Year 6)
- Pass the National Psychology Exam and apply for general registration
"The Master of Professional Psychology is the bridge between your undergraduate training and your internship year — it's where students make the transition from learner to practitioner," Hayley explained.
Students enter the program after completing an APAC-accredited fourth year of psychology study and gaining provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.
Study psychology online from anywhere in Australia
One of the biggest barriers facing aspiring psychologists is geography. Many postgraduate psychology programs require students to relocate or travel regularly to attend classes and placements.
UNE has taken a different approach.
The Master of Professional Psychology can be completed entirely online, including mandatory intensive schools, allowing students to remain in their local communities while studying. The course can be completed full-time in one year or part-time over a longer period.
"Our students don't have to uproot their lives to pursue this qualification. They can remain in their communities, serve the people around them, and still earn an accredited postgraduate degree”, Hayley said.
For regional, rural and remote Australians, that flexibility can make postgraduate study possible without putting careers, families or community commitments on hold.
A psychology degree designed for working adults
Hayley says “Our students come from all walks of life — some are recent graduates, others are mid-career professionals making a deliberate change, and others have spent years working in related fields before deciding to formalise their path into psychology. What they share is a commitment to the work and a need for study that fits around their life. The course is built for exactly that.”
The course combines asynchronous learning with optional live teaching sessions, giving students greater control over when and where they study.
UNE is the only public university in Australia to receive five-star ratings for Overall Experience for 20 consecutive years (Good Universities Guide 2007–2026) and recently earned a Diamond rating for digital learning from ASCILITE TELAS 2025 — the highest possible recognition.
What makes UNE's psychology program different?
Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the course is its 300-hour simulated placement program.
Unlike traditional placements that rely on external organisations, UNE's students complete a comprehensive simulated learning experience designed to prepare them for professional practice before entering their internship year. The placement includes client scenarios across different age groups and presentations, individual supervision, group supervision, role plays and clinical assessments.
Students work through case formulations, treatment planning and professional documentation in a structured learning environment.
The model was originally developed by UNE academics and has since received national recognition through an Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) award.
Hayley believes the approach offers significant advantages for developing practitioner confidence.
"Many of our students have never sat across from a client before they begin. The simulated placement gives them a structured, supported space to develop real clinical confidence — to practise, make mistakes, and grow — before they step into their internship. The feedback from supervisors is that our graduates arrive exceptionally well prepared."

From professional psychology to clinical psychology
For students with ambitions beyond general registration, UNE also offers a clear pathway forward. High-performing students can apply for entry into UNE's Master of Psychology (Clinical) before completing the MPP — receiving advanced standing for units completed during their fifth year and moving directly into sixth-year study, without graduating with the MPP.
According to Hayley, many students use the professional master's degree as a stepping stone towards further clinical training.
"For students who discover clinical psychology is where they want to go, the Master of Professional Psychology is a genuine stepping stone — not a detour," she said.
The structure allows graduates to continue building on the knowledge and skills developed during their fifth year while pursuing specialist clinical qualifications.
Building a career in psychology
Choosing to study psychology right now is a response to a genuine national need. A landmark Psychology Supply and Demand Study released in April 2026 found that access to psychology services is already falling short by 57.3%, with the shortfall projected to reach 96.6% by 2038 (Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, 2026). That gap is felt most acutely in regional, rural, and remote communities where access to mental health services is often limited.
Graduates can pursue careers across a range of settings including hospitals, community health services, schools, private practice, research organisations, correctional services and government agencies.
