Dr Nina Bhardwaj from the University of New England has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious the Jewel of India award, 2026 (i.e. Hind Rattan Award), recognising her contributions to research and global engagement.
The award will be formally presented in London, United Kingdom, on 14 August 2026, as part of international celebrations marking India’s 79th Independence Day.
Conferred by the NRI Welfare Society of India, the Hind Rattan Award is regarded as one of the highest honours bestowed upon members of the Indian diaspora worldwide. It recognises individuals for outstanding achievements, professional excellence, and contributions that enhance India’s global reputation.
Dr Bhardwaj’s recognition places her among a distinguished group of global recipients spanning academia, science, medicine, public leadership, and industry. Past awardees have included internationally respected figures such as Prof. Asad Madni (UCLA), Prof. Hosahalli Ramaswamy (McGill University), and leading oncologist Dr. Kashyap Patel, alongside iconic figures such as Mother Teresa.
“This recognition reflects the broader impact of academic work beyond national boundaries. Being acknowledged on a global platform such as this highlights the role universities like UNE play in shaping research, knowledge, and engagement that extend internationally.” Dr Bhardwaj said.
The NRI Welfare Society of India, a long-standing registered organisation, recognises the achievements of Indians living abroad and promotes global connections, collaboration, and contribution.
Dr Bhardwaj’s achievement is particularly notable within the Australian context, where only a small number of Indian-origin professionals — including a limited number of academics — have previously received this honour.
Her recognition reinforces UNE’s commitment to research excellence, global engagement, and meaningful impact beyond academia.
