The Tamworth community is invited to UNE Tamworth’s next FREE TamTalks event celebrating ‘World Bee Day’ at 5pm on Tuesday, May 20 at the UNE Tamworth Study Centre.
Presented by UNE Postdoctoral Research Fellow Carolyn Sonter and founder through the UNE SMART Region Incubator, Katelyn Wall of Wall’s Honey Co, the event focuses on these small but mighty creatures and the roles they play in our environment and economy.
Mrs Wall’s successful honey business saw her create an educational program for preschool aged children and that initiative saw her named a finalist for the title of NSW Agri Futures Rural Woman of the Year in May. She will share her entrepreneurial journey, transitioning from a 20 year career in health care to starting her own, award winning beekeeping business.
“I’m hoping the Tamworth community will take away some lessons learned about starting a small business, and perhaps become inspired to start their own business if they are on the fence about it,” she said. “I also hope they get some insight into bees and beekeeping and what an enjoyable activity for people of all ages.”
Carolyn Sonter is an avid apiarist and has turned her passion for bees into a meaningful academic career while researching the many species of bees and their roles in our environment.
“When most people think of bees they think of the Western honey bee but Australia has approximately 2000 species of native bees that are essential to the pollination of our wild spaces,” she said.
“Bees not only pollinate our food crops but they provide essential ecosystem services in wild spaces that assist the preservation of biodiversity and diverse genetics in those systems.
“Threats to bees include loss of habitat, including the diverse diet that provides, climate change, agrochemicals and pests and disease.”
