The founder of UNE’s Oorala Aboriginal Centre, and a UNE alum dubbed the 'guru of practice management' in Australian healthcare, have been celebrated in the King’s Birthday Honours at the weekend.
Associate Professor Lynette Riley AO has been recognised for her distinguished service to education, particularly through the development in indigenous curriculum and student support, to reconciliation, and to the community. Full citation
Among her many other career highlights and accomplishments, Lynette founded the UNE Oorala Aboriginal Centre in 1986, the same year she became a UNE Research Fellow. She also initiated the Frank Archibald Memorial Lecture series, which in 2023 marks its 37th year.
And for his significant service to medical administration, and to professional organisations, Gary Smith AM has been celebrated in the King's Birthday Honours. Full citation
Gary is the Academic Director of UNE Partnerships’ health programs portfolio, and has made significant contributions to quality and professionalism in the Australian healthcare sector through education and representation. He manages a large general practice in Penrith NSW, and is widely recognised and respected for his dedication to the advancement of practice management in Australia and overseas.
He was the occasional address speaker at the autumn 2022 graduation ceremony for the UNE Faculty of Medicine and Health, during which he received an Honorary Doctor of Letters honoris causa (HonDLitt) for his outstanding contribution to the primary healthcare sector.
