The committee met late last week to receive an update on the progress of the campus development, research, and course activity that UNE is delivering in the Tamworth region.
UNE is in the final stages of approving the successful architectural firm that will design UNE Tamworth, on track to be completed by the end of 2025.
The meeting was attended by Tamworth Regional Council Mayor Russell Webb, representatives from the Tamworth University Reference Group Mitch Hanlon and Stephen Maher, and members of the UNE project team including Interim Vice-Chancellor and CEO Professor Simon Evans.
Professor Evans said it was a timely gathering of key stakeholders as the project nears the design and construction phase.
“UNE is looking forward to moving into the exciting design phase of UNE Tamworth, and we will continue to work closely with our stakeholders in Tamworth as plans are developed over the next year,” he said.
Tamworth Mayor Russell Webb said he was pleased with the progress reported to the Steering Committee.
“This activity is all coming together. As a region we just want to see activity on the ground and look forward to the UNE Campus moving ahead,” Mr Webb said.
“The whole New England North West needs UNE to be successful to support the sustainable growth of our region.”
Mitch Hanlon said “We want UNE to be our University here in Tamworth, just as it is in Armidale, Gunnedah, Narrabri, Moree and the rest of the New England North West.”
A range of topics were covered at the meeting including;
- endorsing the establishment of a Tamworth based student Scholarship fund
- introducing two new undergraduate certificate courses specifically developed for Tamworth students
- updates on a range of research collaborations already happening in the region including the Water Forum research collaboration.
