Keeping Up with Kate Pardy

Published 07 October 2021

It’s easy (and understandable) to become trapped in negative thinking at times like this – so many of us stuck at home, isolated, and all of us unsure of the future. But the smallest action, daily ritual or mantra can be a perfect and priceless antidote.

We’re asking members of our UNE community to share with us what is bringing them joy and hope.

Career Practitioner Kate Pardy, from the UNE Concierge Team, found a very simple way to lift her spirits during a recent lockdown – move her workspace outside.

“When the weather is nice, my partner and I relocate to our front yard, to soak up the sun and get some work done,” Kate told us during the most recent lockdown.

It helps to feel a little bit connected to people, lifts our moods and our productivity.

“All you need is your laptop, a wide-brimmed hat and some sunscreen, a handful of dog treats (for trusted companions Loki and Mia, who also enjoy being outside) and a nice spot.

“We get to wave to people as they go about their daily walks, and watch our small part of the world go by. It helps to feel a little bit connected to people, lifts our moods and our productivity.

“I find it particularly useful when I get a case of the ‘lockdown brain’ – just a general meh feeling that can present as a lack of motivation, a series of negative thoughts or just finding the day mundane.

“A change of scenery makes a world of difference. Recently, while marking assessments, it has given me energy and new perspectives.”
