The University of New England is pleased to see the New South Wales Government’s funding commitment to its Tamworth Campus Proposal.

UNE’s Pro Vice Chancellor, External Relations, Professor Mingan Choct said the University has been working closely with the Tamworth Regional Council, the federal and state members and the whole community over the last 10 months to develop a full proposal which benefits the whole of the New England North West Region.

“UNE welcomes the funding commitment by the NSW Government. Obviously we still have some way to go in order to find enough funds to make the proposal feasible as there is a major shortfall in funding,” Prof. Choct said.

UNE is the longest serving university in regional Australia. The University has always supported students from regional and remote locations with higher education programs to build their knowledge, skills and resilience required in local communities.

“The Tamworth Region continues to grow and is in need of a university campus to support this growth.” Prof. Choct said.

“The NSW Government has said ‘the planned campus will bring an extraordinary boost for the entire region,’ which echoes the community sentiment and completely aligns with UNE’s view.

“We see the gap in funding as a temporary setback and will work constructively with all parties concerned to make this a reality,” he said.
