Join us, taste a variety of meat for Australian beef and support our team to get to the games.

On June 23rd the Indigenous National Games kick off, where the University of New England (UNE) will once again send a representative team. This week-long event brings together Indigenous student-athletes from universities across Australia, competing in basketball, netball, volleyball and touch-football.

“The Indigenous National Games are more than just a sporting event” says Matthew Pine, manager of SportUNE and organiser for the team here at the University of New England. He continues “the games are important because it brings together people with a First Nation background in one place where they can celebrate the experience of being university students as well as their Indigenous cultural connection”. When asked why people should participate in the games Matthew responded, “the Indigenous Games provide a way for both online and on campus students to meet and connect with each other and experience travelling to another part of their country”.

Funding is essential for sending a team, and Oorala has organized diverse fundraising initiatives to support the overall expenses.

The upcoming fundraiser, a meat tasting event, is scheduled for Thursday, March 21, at the Oorala Aboriginal Centre. We are looking for sixty participants, divided into three groups of 20, to engage in taste testing various meats as part of a market research project.

Lexie McGourty, Oorala representative and supervisor for the UNE team, explains, "The $1200 generated will contribute to assisting students by covering expenses such as uniforms, accommodation, and transportation during the games."
