Further details
Join us for the inaugural Fermentation Festival, a full-day celebration bridging science with everyday community wellness, delicious food, and good times. Led by UNE Nutrition in collaboration with UNE Life, The Welders Dog, The Goldfish Bowl, Yin Yang Kombucha, and Gal's Kitchen Culture, this unique event translates complex microbiology into practical, hands-on skills for your home kitchen.
Daytime Masterclasses (UNE Campus)
Throughout the day, you will participate in interactive masterclasses guided by esteemed local food artisans and university educators.
- Discover the science and craft of sourdough baking with The Goldfish Bowl.
- Master live cultures and flavour balancing with Yin Yang Kombucha.
- Learn the techniques behind kimchi and lacto-fermented vegetables with UNE Nutrition.
Participants will gain evidence-based nutritional literacy and leave equipped with the skills, recipes, and live starter cultures needed to confidently create low-cost, healthy fermented foods at home.
Evening Celebration (The Welders Dog)
As evening falls, the festival moves to The Welders Dog for a communal celebration of regional produce. Connect with fellow food enthusiasts over a bespoke, fermentation-themed canapé menu designed by UNE Life. The evening will also feature a fermented beverage tasting (beer or switchel), a guided brewery tour, and a keynote talk by A/Prof Gal Winter.
Whether you are a seasoned fermenter, a student, or simply curious about improving your gut health on a budget, this festival offers a welcoming space to learn, connect, and celebrate our vibrant regional food culture.
