Unit information

This unit provides you with a comprehensive overview of the law, regulation and ethics that govern medical practice and the doctor/patient relationship. It is particularly relevant if you are a student with an interest in healthcare regulation.
You will enhance your understanding in several key areas, including the legal principles and concepts in health care, the framework of the law regulating health care, and the legal and ethical conflicts issues that are associated with the practice of modern medicine.
You will also develop your critical thinking skills to analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of the current law governing the practice of medicine and the doctor/patient relationship, and how it affects people of different socioeconomic backgrounds and diverse cultural and religious beliefs.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a command and coherent understanding of the legal principles and concepts in health care; the framework of the law regulating health care; and an educated awareness of the legal and ethical conflicts issues that are associated with the practice of modern medicine;
- use initiative and judgement to critically analyse, synthesise, and evaluate the effectiveness of the current law governing the practice of medicine and the doctor/patient relationship; and how it affects people of different socioeconomic backgrounds and diverse cultural and religious beliefs; and
- demonstrate highly-developed skills to identify legal issues relating to a medico-legal dispute and produce clear and coherent written communications that are based upon analysis, synthesis, and the application of professional judgment, as well as reflection and evaluation of the relevant law, the underlying theoretical principles, and independent research.
