Unit information
This unit provides an introduction to reading pedagogy, including approaches to working with print-based, digital and multimodal texts. It introduces you to research about social practices of reading, and about processes of learning to read.
You will explore the essential components of reading instruction, including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, as well as systematic approaches to teaching reading.
You will be introduced to diagnostic approaches to assessing reading, and approaches to planning and differentiating according to individual student needs.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate understanding of theoretical perspectives on the process of reading (GTSD 1.2.1);
- demonstrate knowledge of evidence-based approaches to teaching reading and viewing (GTSD 2.1.1);
- demonstrate understanding of approaches to diagnostic assessment (GTSD 1.5.1, 1.6.1, 5.1.1, 5.4.1);
- demonstrate knowledge of strategies for teaching reading and viewing to students with a range of needs and backgrounds (GTSD 1.5.1, 1.6.1, 3.5.1, 5.1.1);
- design a sequence of engaging reading lessons addressing relevant curriculum or syllabus outcomes (GTSD 1.5.1, 2.1.1, 2.2.1, 3.2.1, 5.1.1, 5.4.1); and
- recognise ways in which literacy pedagogy in the 21st century is socially and culturally situated (GTSD 1.2.1, 2.1.1).
