Unit information
In this unit you will examine the past, present and possible future patterns of land use and transport.
You will investigate planning for urban and rural transport needs, at a variety of scales, from local to national, in the light of the social, economic and policy issues involved.
Assessment tasks and a non-mandatory intensive school introduce some of the techniques of professional urban transport planners and engineers. You will develop your research and analytical skills and future proof your career in urban planning when you learn about traffic management, local area planning and engineering.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- independently apply intermediate research skills to local area transport issues, including evaluating literature and analysing problems within their context to develop realistic, practical and implementable solutions;
- demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of transport planning problems at a range of scales, including the economic, financial, social and political contexts that influence policy and practice;
- analyse and evaluate the different methods that might be used to analyse transport planning problems, with a critical understanding of possible approaches used to address transport problems; and
- demonstrate the ability to manage complex projects, including excellent communication and management capabilities, modelling skills applicable in a professional career.
