This unit is the second in a pair which prepares you to become a confident and competent teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

You will explore knowledge about the English language in greater depth to address the context of English language use, text structure and cohesion, grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling and punctuation.

You will examine the role of teaching explicit knowledge about language in the TESOL classroom, focus on learning and teaching the macroskills as well as TESOL program planning, design and evaluation.

As part of the unit you will complete a 60-hour supervised professional experience placement. Completion of EDLI502 and EDLI504 is necessary to meet the accreditation standards for most employers, for example, teaching TESOL/EAL-D in Australian schools, in English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) and with providers of the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).

Notes

This unit may require contact with children under 18 years old in an educational setting. Before entering the setting, all students must have completed online Anaphylaxis training, an online Child Protection module, and have obtained a valid Working with Children Check clearance (for those students wishing to complete their placement in NSW) or equivalent (for those students wishing to complete their placement outside NSW). Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

demonstrate knowledge of the English language, including knowledge of the context of language use and language variation, text structure and cohesion, grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling and punctuation;
discuss and demonstrate the role of teaching explicit knowledge about language in the TESOL classroom;
demonstrate professional knowledge and understanding of the components of a TESOL program planning, design and evaluation, including analysis of situation/needs, task design, assessment and evaluation; and
design and deliver effective lessons and teaching sequences forTESOL students to build knowledge and skills in each of the macroskills.
