Unit information
Studying this unit will equip you with the knowledge and skills to confidently and creatively design science and technology lessons and programs.
You will learn to integrate the NSW K-6 science and technology syllabus with other learning areas, including literacy, to provide an integrated learning experience for students. You will also develop your understanding of the scope and sequence of the K-6 science and technology syllabus.
You will explore a range of pedagogies that apply to science and technology teaching, as well as teaching resources, including ICT, to engage students in their learning.
Putting your skills into practice, you will design and trial hands-on science experiences and technology briefs for children.
You will also deepen your understanding of assessment strategies that improve science and technology teaching and learning.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of primary science and technology (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.4.1);
- organise content into an effective learning and teaching sequence using appropriate pedagogical and assessment strategies for primary science and technology (GTSD 2.2.1, 3.3.1, 5.1.1);
- analyse the contents of the K–6 Science and technology syllabus for New South Wales to develop safe and engaging learning experiences for children (GTSD 2.1.1, 3.1.1, 4.4.1);
- analyse the impact of Literacy and Numeracy demands in the K–6 Science and technology syllabus and demonstrate a range of strategies for teaching using an integrated approach (GTSD 2.5.1, 3.3.1);
- demonstrate knowledge of a range of resources, including digital technologies, that engage students in their learning and analyse the role that investigating, designing and making, and technology play in the process of learning and the importance of communication through language and other expressive means (GTSD 3.4.1); and
- demonstrate correct use of relevant strategies for differentiating output, process, and content (GTSD 1.5.1).
