Unit information
This unit prepares you even further for a career as a teacher in the modern world. You will develop an understanding of the foundational theories about how children learn, and learn how to plan, teach and effectively assess your high quality lessons and learning activities.
Premised on the understanding that learning, teaching and assessment are a pedagogical trilogy, in this unit you will develop the skills you need to plan and implement this approach and report the outcomes to different stakeholders.
You will learn a comprehensive range of strategies and skills that promote effective teaching and active learning, including how to teach critical thinking skills. You will cover theories relating to the use of digital technology and social media in your classroom.
This unit introduces you to a small number of classroom behaviour management techniques that will raise your awareness and help you successfully prepare for and complete 15 days of professional experience in a primary school.

Notes
This unit requires contact with children in an educational setting. Before entering the setting all students must have completed online Anaphylaxis training, an online Child Protection module, and have obtained a valid NSW Working with Children Check clearance (for those students wishing to complete their placement in NSW) or equivalent check (for those students wishing to complete their placement outside NSW). Please see the Office for Professional Learning Important Information webpage for more information.
Placements are completed during dates designated by the School of Education and published by The Office for Professional Learning on the OPL's Moodle PREXUS site.
This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of foundational theories of how children learn (GTSD 1.2.1);
- formulate, apply, and evaluate strategies and principles for effective pedagogy, assessment (including moderation), and inclusion. (GTSD 1.3.1, 3.1.1, 3.3.1, 5.1.1, 5.3.1);
- create quality learning environments and positive classroom behaviour, including a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies (GTSD 3.5.1, 4.2.1, 4.3.1);
- apply practical approaches for fostering positive relationships with students and positive classroom management, taking into account students’ diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds (GTSD 1.3.1, 4.3.1);
- demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and the need to engage with constructive feedback from supervisors and teachers to improve teaching practices. (GTSD 6.1.1, 6.3.1); and
- demonstrate competence during professional placement in a primary school setting (GTSD 3.3.1, 4.2.1, 6.3.1, 1.2.1,1.3.1, 3.1.1, 3.3.1, 3.5.1, 4.2.1, 4.3.1, 5.1.1, 5.3.1, 6.1.1).
