Unit information
Developing your teaching skills is far more than planning fun lessons for your future students. In this unit you will be introduced to the foundational theories and principles, and a range of skills and strategies, for effective and evidence-informed student and teacher learning.
You will build an understanding of how to liaise with communities, external professionals and stakeholders to enhance and broaden your professional knowledge and practice. You’ll also develop a proactive approach to student and community engagement, and strengthen your skills in regards to quality feedback processes, critical reflective practice, and working within the guidelines of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
You will complete 10 days of online virtual professional experience.
Attendance in a classroom is not required.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- identify and demonstrate a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to support student learning (GTSD 3.5.1, 4.1.1);
- conduct classroom observations that are focused on student engagement and delivering appropriate feedback. Students will also reflect on how they might use what they observe to guide their future teaching (GTSD 4.1.1, 5.2.1, 6.2.1);
- demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers in supporting critical reflective practice. Students will also use reflective practices to begin to develop a personal philosophy of education (GTSD 6.1.1, 6.2.1);
- interpret professional learning data to consider the need for continued professional learning, and the implications for improved student learning (GTSD 6.4.1);
- identify and explore how professionals and community representatives can be involved in broadening teachers’ professional knowledge and practice (GTSD 7.4.1); and
- demonstrate a broad understanding of ‘knowing your students’, ‘ethics and professionalism’, and be familiar with the legal and ethical requirements of teaching (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.3.1, 1.5.1, 1.6.1, 7.1.1, 7.2.1).
