Unit information
In any primary or secondary classroom you enter as a teacher, you will find students with a range of mixed abilities. This unit explores issues relating to teaching and learning for gifted students within these classrooms.
In the unit you will be introduced to models and conceptions of giftedness, associated issues and implications, and you will explore the social, emotional and educational needs of underachieving gifted students. You will learn a range of enrichment and acceleration strategies for developing gifts into talents and learn how to integrate these activities within your mixed-ability classes.
This unit extends upon the knowledge gained in prior units (Planning for Effective learning, Inclusive and Special Education, Classroom Behaviour Management). You will review the behaviour and mental health of students, assessment techniques and strategies for planning effective lessons and programs. You will spend some time examining your beliefs and attitudes about teaching and learning.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- identify effective models of giftedness, characteristics of gifted students, identification techniques and processes, and diversity for talent development in today's mixed-ability classrooms;
- discuss the implications of underachievement, the social, emotional and educational needs of gifted students;
- identify and demonstrate understanding of programs and instruction for differentiating teaching for individual student needs and talent development in mixed-ability classrooms;
- work collaboratively with their peers to develop and present an evaluation of educationally relevant claims and philosophies;
- demonstrate understanding of enrichment and extension and gifted students' need for accelerated provisions including learning how to identify, plan, record, practise and scaffold strategies for successful learning for all students in mixed-ability classrooms; and
- identify support needs and provisions for gifted students, and plan and write effective differentiated programs for talent development.
