Unit information
This unit will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of a range of strategies that can be used to change resource use and other related behaviours. You will explore the legal aspects of market and regulatory theory, the legal underpinnings of different types of interventions and links between national/international environmental governance.
You will also become familiar with several non-legal aspects of natural resource governance issues including strategy development, understanding transactions and transacting systems, and the impact and role of institutional arrangements.
Throughout the unit, you will develop your critical thinking skills in analysing, evaluating and designing Natural Resource Managements strategies to future proof your career in evolving legal and policy fields.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a coherent understanding of the nature and scope of the institutions, rules, organisations; the types of instruments, the theoretical frameworks; the methods used to analyse institutional systems; and the legal arrangements (including their costs/benefits/issues) applicable to natural resource governance;
- use initiative and judgement to critically analyse, evaluate and design Natural Resource Management (NRM) strategies (strategic thinking, transacting systems analysis); and
- demonstrate an ability to employ the skills of legal and other research techniques, reasoning and argument to develop independent opinions on legal and other governance issues relating to natural resources, communicating coherently and using persuasive legal or other argument.
