Unit information
At a time of global turbulence and rapid social change, this unit provides you with an understanding of suicidal behaviours in contemporary Australia and the globe, through the lens of both our historical and theoretical perspectives.
Whether you are studying social work or community services, or you are enrolled in any course, this unit is suitable regardless of your discipline, as suicide prevention is everyone’s business.
Studying this unit, you will utilise our current evidence base to explore suicide prevention strategies and develop a well-rounded understanding of interventions targeted across age and vulnerable groups. You will also learn about support pathways for individuals and communities following suicide.
Consider the current strengths and limitations of our knowledge and practice, and gain insight into modern frameworks used to assess suicide risk.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- identify and describe the historical context of understanding suicide;
- consider the strengths and limitations of current theoretical understandings of suicidal behaviours;
- identify evidence based promotion activities, interventions and postvention support; and
- assess suicidal risk signs in individuals and identify appropriate support pathways, including health and social care service options.
