Unit information
This unit introduces you to foundational strategies and skills that will help you to build your identity as a social worker.
During your face-to-face, mandatory intensive school, you’ll have the opportunity to practice and demonstrate effective communication, teamwork, problem-solving, critical-thinking and reflexive practice skills through a social work lens.
You will also develop awareness of your role as a social worker within the broader community, exploring culture, identity and discrimination. Theories relevant to cross-cultural issues within social work, discriminatory practices based on cultural norms, and the importance of cultural humility will all be examined.

ALL students must attend the on campus MANDATORY intensive school for the unit. This face-to-face intensive is held over a 4-day period at UNE’s Armidale and Sydney campus.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- develop an understanding of effective communication, teamwork, problem-solving, critical and reflexive thinking skills through a social work lens;
- identify key aspects of social work theory into practice; and
- develop awareness of their role as a social worker within the broader community.
