Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

All workplaces can be stressful. Prior to entering the workforce, this unit allows you to understand and evaluate the structure and effectiveness of workplace wellbeing programs, including (but not limited to) stress management and coping, fostering resilience, systems design (including employee co-development), and value-based, respectful and inclusive work environments. You also critique key theoretical concepts and the empirical evidence for the impact of mental health and wellbeing on work performance, culture and satisfaction.

In this unit, you investigate and evaluate workplace health and safety policies and workload expectations, and develop strategies to set boundaries within context-specific workplaces. To establish your circles of influence at work and avoid burnout, you build skills and confidence in navigating workplace dynamics. This includes strategic decision-making, self-advocacy and agency in understanding when to speak up and when to let go. To navigate conflict effectively, you learn evidence-based de-escalation strategies and practical tools to manage challenging behaviours in and out of the workplace.

By the end of this unit, you have the confidence to apply and adapt skills for detecting and responding to mental health problems in the workplace, identifying antecedents and consequences of mental (ill)health and (non)wellbeing, promoting mental hygiene and appropriate help-seeking, evaluating programs, and understanding referral pathways for mental health support.

Woman studying online at home

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
