Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the methodologies of historians, various approaches to the discipline of History and the rationale for learning and teaching about the past in schools (GTSD 1.5.1, 2.1.1);
2. demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the current syllabuses for years 7–10 History, Stage 6 Modern History, Stage 6 Ancient History, and the Life Skills curriculum including their aims, objectives, outcomes, content, course requirements, key terms and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.4.1);
3. organise the content of history curriculum for secondary school students into an effective learning and teaching sequence which enables students to achieve the relevant syllabus outcomes, including critical thinking, and incorporates appropriate assessment strategies (GTSD 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 2.5.1, 2.6.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1, 3.5.1, 3.6.1, 5.1.1); and
4. understand the rationale for continued professional learning to improve student learning, the use of external professionals and community representatives, and engage in continuing professional development as teachers of History by accessing and evaluating websites that provide both information sources and support for secondary school history teachers (GTSD 3.4.1, 4.5.1, 6.2.1, 6.4.1, 7.4.1).
