Unit information
Your abilities as a teacher to plan, assess and report on students’ progress in science education through years 11 and 12 are essential to helping students successfully complete their Preliminary and HSC courses or equivalent.
Studying this unit, you will explore ways to incorporate compulsory student assessment tasks that address specific knowledge and skills mandated by the NSW Stage 6 syllabus into classroom activities.
You will also address broader professional issues such as: accreditation and the range of professional development opportunities available; legislative requirements of science teachers and implications for teaching and learning; school structure, administration and dynamics; and social contexts in science teaching.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- plan and present a lesson sequence that incorporates appropriate pedagogy, exhibits constructivist ideas about teaching and learning, reflects knowledge of students’ different approaches to learning, acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, and addresses identified specific outcomes and provides a meaningful evaluation strategy (GTSD 1.2.1, 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 2.4.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1);
- demonstrate knowledge of a range of appropriate, engaging and safe approaches and resources, including ICT, to support student learning in a science teaching context (GTSD 2.1.1, 1.5.1, 2.6.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1, 4.4.1);
- demonstrate the ability to select a range of suitable activities and assessment strategies and map syllabus outcomes to these lesson activities and assessment strategies (GTSD 2.3.1, 5.1.1); and
- demonstrate the ability to plan the provision of timely oral and written feedback to students (GTSD 5.2.1).
