Unit information
Pharmacists have unique opportunities to make a positive impact that may improve access to healthcare and provide quality services for people living in rural and remote areas.
Combining study with a one-week rural pharmacy placement, you will gain insight into the principles of pharmacy practice in rural and remote communities.
You will explore equitable service provision and adaptations to practice in rural and remote areas, given limited resources and the challenges of distance.
Building on your ability to communicate effectively, you will focus on the provision of audience-appropriate education. Topics include health promotion, immunisation (including vaccination training), veterinary medicine, rural and remote health, e-health and travel health.

Enrolment rules
Notes
Enrolment in this unit closes four weeks before trimester commencement. Verification of compliance in NSW ClinConnect is required before any placement can be organised. Students that do not achieve compliance in ClinConnect by enrolment close date will be withdrawn from the unit prior to census.
Placement allocation will consider student location preferences; however, students should be aware that preferences cannot always be met, and that they may be required to travel to undertake their placement. Once allocated, placement location cannot be changed.
Prior to enrolling in this unit, students must have a valid NSW Working With Children Check (for those wishing to complete their placement in NSW) or equivalent (for those wishing to complete their placement outside NSW).
Advanced standing cannot be granted for PHAR460.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- analyse the clinical, regulatory, workforce and resource factors influencing pharmacy practice in rural and remote healthcare settings;
- apply advanced clinical reasoning and professional judgement to deliver safe, effective and context-responsive pharmacy services in rural communities;
- evaluate the role of pharmacists in delivering contemporary and expanded professional services, including emerging models of care and authorised practice frameworks; and
- demonstrate leadership, accountability and effective interprofessional collaboration while critically reflecting on professional capability development in rural pharmacy practice.

To pass this unit, you must achieve at least 50% in this task, and meet all other passing requirements in the unit.
