Unit information
For a career in the behavioural sciences, your ability to correctly and creatively use a range of research methods is essential and adds value in many related disciplines as well.
In this unit you will be introduced to commonly used methods of research for psychological contexts, exploring the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches.
Building knowledge for choosing appropriate methodology for different research questions, the unit will help you to fine tune your ability to evaluate, interpret and communicate results.
You will explore topics including measurement and operationalisation of constructs, the data collection process and the design of simple studies.
The unit also extends your applied statistics skills, focusing on descriptive measures, correlation and regression, the comparison of two or more groups in one-way and factorial designs, the logic of statistical inference and the use of a widely utilised statistical package (SPSS).

GradDipPsych students: It is a requirement that students who wish to enrol in PSYC202 in Trimester 1 in order to complete their degree program in three trimesters, complete PSYC101 and PSYC102 in Trimester 3 of the preceding year.
PSYC202 is a 200-level unit that focuses on research methods, data analysis and SPSS, not the fundamentals of psychology.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of research findings as they relate to issues in a psychological context;
- independently select appropriate methodology to execute statistical analysis demonstrating your ability to evaluate, interpret and communicate the results to others;
- analyse and evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, and logic of selected statistical procedures;
- apply the use of a statistical software package to conduct a statistical analysis; and
- transmit their knowledge in written form using APA style methods and results sections.
