Unit information
In this unit, students progress through the stages required for developing a proposal for a small scale research project relevant to medical practice. The unit provides students with an understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of research, study design and protocol development that are essential for conducting research in medical practice. At the end of the unit, students will have the ability to complete a research proposal in an area of interest related to medical practice.

Student enrolment is semester based, MEDI6001A (Semester 1) and MEDI6001B (Semester 2), with the delivery of the academic content occurring across the full year.
This unit requires students to work in small groups to design a research project under the supervision of experienced supervisors. The research project will be implemented in Year 4.
Students will be required to be able to access learning remotely and will require equipment that meets minimum technical specifications for reliable access. They are also required to purchase personal equipment required for clinical activity (e.g. stethoscope). Further details are available on the Joint Medical Program website.
Students must meet the following Placement Requirements:
NSW Health Verification Requirements must be met prior to attending a clinical placement.
Students may require a Working With Children Check for placements outside the health system. This requirement will be confirmed by the host institution prior to a student commencing placement.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationship between research and improved health outcomes for individuals and populations, and the influence on medical professional practice;
- critically analyse and differentiate between the methods used to investigate and measure health quality and outcomes at an individual and population level;
- demonstrate an understanding of the nature and scope of research and quality improvement initiatives in medical professional practice;
- synthesise and apply medical and research concepts to generate a specialised research question providing a theoretical and practical rationale;
- apply a conceptual framework or established theory to develop a specialised research study;
- critically analyse and synthesise pertinent literature to inform a research proposal;
- critically evaluate and address relevant ethical issues when designing a research project;
- select and justify methods for visualising data, displaying data and presenting data to specialist and non-specialist audiences;
- critically evaluate and justify methods of data collection and analysis including appropriate sampling procedures, sample size and statistical tests where appropriate;
- design and evaluate a timeline and budget to implement a research based project;
- demonstrate evaluation and constructive feedback to peers on research proposals;
- critically evaluate and reflect on the proposed timeline, budget and logistics as compared to the reality of implementation of a research project;
- manage the tasks involved in designing a research project with a group including maintaining a record of activity and other supporting documentation; and
- contribute effectively to group based research, engaging in the specific group dynamics and group tasks.
