Unit information
Non-metropolitan regions across the Western world face a number of complex developmental challenges, including population decline, dependence on a narrow range of natural resource industries, outdated infrastructure and, often, a weakened political position.
Via a comparative analysis of regional development issues in Australia and Canada, this unit explores the factors underlying uneven regional development and, in doing so, teaches you a range of practical diagnostic skills and techniques that can be applied by governments and non-government organisations in order to foster successful and sustainable local and regional development.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an integrated understanding of the general nature of non-metropolitan regional development issues in developed world nations;
- critically analyse, reflect on and synthesise solutions around the complex causes of these issues and be able to communicate this effectively to others;
- demonstrate advanced understanding of the regional development policy-making process, with an aim toward identifying and applying best practice' in regional policy; and
- expertly apply a range of research skills, particularly database research, and complementary analytical techniques that model life-long application in a professional career.
