Unit information
This unit enhances your ability to recognise and respond to the deteriorating patient, utilising contemporary technological and clinical innovation to deliver safe, quality care. Focusing on patient advocacy, you will explore the knowledge and skills necessary for recognising and responding to the acutely deteriorating patient.
You will have opportunities to reflect and consolidate your professional practice with 160 hours of professional education practice (PEP), and demonstrate attributes that are in demand in the workplace, including self-directed learning, delegation, teamwork and communication, management and leadership.

This unit includes 160 hours of professional education practice.
Professional education practice will only proceed for students who meet pre-clinical requirements in the first eight weeks of their enrolment in the course and maintain the currency of these requirements throughout the duration of the course.
Offering at UNE Sydney Campus is for BN students admitted to UNE Sydney Campus only.
Please note, the ability to enrol in this unit will close early due to an early intensive school. Please see the intensive school note for further information.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- advocate for safe and effective nursing care including the integration of digital technologies with effective communication and documentation;
- plan, implement and evaluate nursing care associated with recognising and responding to the deteriorating patient with a person-centred and coordinated approach;
- critically analyse the nurses' legal and ethical role in relation to caring for, and responding to, people/clients with acute and complex care needs across diverse healthcare settings;
- demonstrate proficient and safe application of person-centred competent care and professional practice in the clinical setting; and
- reflect on professional education practice as a beginning Registered Nurse using the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered nurse standards for practice as an integrated framework for assessing competence and determining future development needs within theoretical and clinical environments.

Assessments are subject to change up to 8 weeks prior to the start of the teaching period in which you are undertaking the unit.
