Unit information
Building on your substantial teaching experience, this unit allows you to complete 20-day teaching placement in a mainstream school.
In this practical unit, you will engage in school-based activities, taking on most of the tasks and responsibilities typically performed by classroom teachers. This hands-on experience allows you to apply your growing theoretical knowledge from other university units to real-world teaching situations.
You will deepen your understanding of teaching practice through observation, reflection, discussion, and by taking responsibility for extended teaching activities. This combination of practical and theoretical learning will help you develop significant insight into the teaching profession.
Throughout your placement, you will receive support from university staff to assist with any needs that arise. We also encourage you to stay connected with your peers, sharing experiences and advice to make the most of your placement.

Notes
Students must be enrolled in, or have already completed, all curriculum units required for their degree before undertaking this unit.
This unit requires contact with children in an educational setting. Before entering the setting, all students must have completed online Anaphylaxis training, an online Child Protection module, and have obtained a valid NSW Working with Children Check clearance (for those students wishing to complete their placement in NSW) or equivalent check (for those students wishing to complete their placement outside NSW). Please see the Office for Professional Learning Important Information webpage for more information.
Placements are completed during dates designated by schools and published by The Office for Professional Learning on the OPL's Moodle PREXUS site.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a comprehensive awareness of curriculum and pedagogy as relevant to the teaching and learning of students by interaction with teachers and students and by appropriate recording;
- apply theoretical and conceptual knowledge to plan, implement and evaluate a range of teaching activities within both teaching units and a comprehensive program of work;
- demonstrate a knowledge of the complex intersections between social and educational context, curriculum and various arenas of policy;
- apply broad knowledge and skills to demonstrate an effective level of classroom management and responsiveness to individual students including appropriate teaching strategies;
- use autonomy and judgement to engage in critically reflective practice in terms of all aspects of education; and
- communicate with teachers, students and all other school personnel in an effective and professional manner, applying skills that model a professional career.
