Unit information
Law enforcement is complex and demanding, and involves many ethical and moral decisions on a daily basis. This unit will investigate the role of the police in social control, maintaining law and order, keeping the peace and preventing crime.
You will explore a broad range of the considerations in the criminological sub-field of policing and national security, examine policing from both a local and international perspective. The topics you will cover in this unit include policing methodology; the history, context and structure of police organisations; style of policing; police-community interaction; ethical conduct; and the interchange between policing and wider national security agencies.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a coherent theoretical and technical knowledge of the key institutions and policies of policing in Australia;
- identify, analyse and evaluate the social controls that transform policies and institutions of the Australian Criminal Justice System and be able to communicate this to others;
- apply theoretical and conceptual knowledge to address issues around complex or unpredictable problems in relation to policing; and
- demonstrate autonomy and judgement through research abilities and written analysis.
