Unit information

Plants play a critical role in the function of nearly all ecosystems, using energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and food. In this unit, you explore the vital link between plant function and plant traits, and how traits contribute to survival in rapidly changing environments.
You explore the use of plant traits and how they are used to understand how plants interact with their environment and affect ecosystem processes. Moving beyond species identity, you focus on functional strategies to help predict community assembly, responses to environmental change, and ecosystem functioning.
You examine the processes and resources that drive plant growth and development, including seed germination and dormancy, seedling development, photosynthesis, plant growth regulators, plant water use, mineral nutrition, source–sink relations and resource allocation, stress physiology, and plant defences, as the physiological basis for functional trait expression. From cells and tissues to whole plants and communities, you examine the physiology, morphology, functional ecology, and adaptations of plants in natural and managed Australian ecosystems.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of and analyse the fundamental basis of plant growth and development, including symbiotic relationships and nutritional adaptations of plants, emphasising the primary basis of plant-water relations and movement of water and nutrients in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum;
- evaluate and explain information at different levels of integration, from cells, tissues to whole plant to ecosystems, plant function and structure with regard to how plant traits contribute to survival and ecosystem functioning;
- apply appropriate skills in the handling and interpreting of plant material and data for scientific study; and
- communicate scientific information about plant structure, function, and ecosystem processes to others, using verbal or written formats.

Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
