Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

Physical chemistry offers us boundless opportunities to harness the power of matter. Being able to successfully predict the chemical and physical properties of atomic and molecular systems is key to successfully manipulating and utilising them.

Studying this unit, you will develop an in-depth understanding of quantum and thermal structures, and the relationship of these to reactivity and physical processes.

Quantum and thermal structures are fields which present you with interesting theoretical and technical puzzles, and as such the laboratory component of this unit is not bench-based. Rather it involves exploring physical chemistry concepts and data analysis, and applying these to solve a range of problems.

Focusing throughout on applications to chemical and physical systems, topics include introductory quantum mechanics, symmetry, molecular orbital theory, the laws of thermodynamics, work, heat, internal energy and enthalpy, entropy and free energy.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. understand how the principles of quantum mechanics can be used to predict atomic and molecular properties, and use these principles to predict properties of simple atomic and molecular systems;
  2. explain types of chemical bonding and the formalisms used to describe them;
  3. understand, articulate and apply the laws of thermodynamics to chemical and physical systems; and
  4. solve a range of intermediate level numerical, physical and chemical problems in the field.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
