Unit information
Phonetics and phonology is the study of how humans produce, perceive and interpret speech sounds. This unit introduces you to the varied and diverse speech sounds that humans around the world produce as part of their languages, and how those sounds are organised.
Building on your foundational linguistics knowledge, you will learn to identify and describe the sounds of English and world languages, and their interaction within individual languages. Using relevant theoretical and conceptual methods, you will take a hands-on approach to analysing laboratory and field data from various languages, and solving problems based on them.
If you are interested or involved in language teaching, phonics, speech therapy or a discipline concerned with producing and interpreting spoken language, this is the unit for you.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate theoretical knowledge of the sound systems of English and other languages, including their description, transcription, sound changes and phonological processes;
- demonstrate understanding of how phonological data in any language can be approached using the techniques of contemporary descriptive grammar;
- exercise critical thinking and judgement in undertaking phonological analysis;
- explain how phonological facts are relevant to issues in linguistic theory;
- provide clear explanations of phonological phenomena to others; and
- demonstrate responsibility and autonomy in individual and/or collaborative work tasks.
