Unit information
Rapid expansion of the number of older Australians is expected over the next decade. A critical understanding of older peoples’ experience of health, wellbeing and healthcare can add an invaluable dimension to roles in the services that work together to support and care for our ageing populations.
Using a person-centred approach and a range of learning media, this unit explores theories of ageing. Your understanding of the needs and experiences of older people across the spectrum of services available to them in Australia will be developed, with reference to global influences and trends.
With a particular focus on health care, you will examine the ways contemporary ideas about ageing and old age are shaped, promoted and spread across generations, as well as societal contexts.
You will also gain a deeper insight into professional practice roles and the potential opportunities available for participation in policy development and service innovation at the beginner practitioner level.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- critically evaluate a range of theories and models of ageing and their influence in shaping beliefs about ageing, older adults' contribution to society and their health care needs and experiences;
- articulate the influence of the UN Decade of Ageing collaboration, including good health and wellbeing, integrated and responsive health and social care systems;
- critically appraise the national legislation and policy frameworks relevant to ageing and their relationship to global initiatives; and
- investigate and evaluate the structure of the aged care sector in Australia.
