Unit information
In this advanced unit, you will learn about several types of anxiety disorders and their neurobiology, including Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Seasonal Affective Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
You will learn about the current diagnostic systems and available treatments and apply critical thinking and analytical skills to the evaluation of information regarding the clinical and behavioural phenotypes of anxiety disorders.
Various neuroimaging techniques will be examined, and you will evaluate their potential as syndromal diagnostic tools.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- exhibit an advanced broad and coherent theoretical and technical knowledge of neuroscience with depth in the concepts and ideas underlying anxiety disorders;
- apply critical thinking and analytic skills to the evaluation of information regarding the clinical and behavioural phenotypes of anxiety disorders;
- demonstrate an understanding of the available pharmacological and behavioural interventions with the ability to transmit this knowledge to specialist and non-specialist audiences;
- demonstrate extensive and well-developed cognitive and technical skills to review research and clinical literature regarding anxiety disorders;
- demonstrate an understanding of the different neuroimaging techniques like EEG and fMRI to address the need of biomarker to diagnose anxiety disorders; and
- demonstrate self-directed learning in the fields of anxiety disorders.

| Oral Examination - Assurance task | Yes | 35% | All offerings | Students will deliver a 10-minute presentation on a chosen topic taken from the lecture content. Following this, they will answer questions for a minimum of 10 minutes. The presentation will not be graded. It is mandatory to achieve a minimum of 50% to pass this assessment. Students must pass this assessment to be eligible to pass the unit. |
| Oral Examination Based on Live Lecture - Assurance task | Yes | 30% | All offerings | Students will watch a recorded research lecture via zoom and then answer a minimum of five questions that relate to issues and content raised in the lecture. It is mandatory to achieve a minimum of 50% to pass this assessment. Students must pass this assessment to be eligible to pass the unit. |
