Unit information
Equip yourself with an understanding of the role of anatomy in the function of the nervous system, with broad theoretical and technical knowledge of key concepts in neuroanatomy.
In this unit you will explore all levels of the anatomical organisation of the nervous system. Starting with histological features and progressing to gross anatomy, including the developing brain, you will explore cellular, developmental and gross neuroanatomy.
You will develop a well-rounded understanding of our current neuroanatomical knowledge, including the histological exploration of neurons and glia, neurodevelopment, and gross anatomy of both the peripheral and central nervous system, including the major nerves, spinal cord, brain stem, diencephalon and cerebrum as well as the limbic and visual system.
Practical sessions enhance your theoretical learning, providing opportunities to hone your technical skills with hands-on experience.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- exhibit an advanced broad and coherent theoretical and technical knowledge of neuroscience with depth in the concepts and ideas underlying cellular developmental, and gross neuroanatomy;
- apply critical thinking and analytic skills to the evaluation of information regarding the cellular, developmental and gross neuroanatomy;
- transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to others both verbally and in written formats;
- demonstrate extensive and well-developed cognitive and current technical knowledge in the field of cellular, developmental and gross neuroanatomy
- demonstrate an extended autonomy and judgement to exhibit a sound knowledge of cellular, developmental and gross neuroanatomy; and
- demonstrate self-directed learning in the fields of cellular, developmental and gross neuroanatomy.
