Unit information
For a musical performance to be effective, a range of professional skills are needed before the artist is on stage. In this unit you will learn the essential skills needed to prepare for a musical performance.
You will learn to analyse and apply musical performance workflows and stagecraft which includes: performance planning; individual preparation, practice and rehearsal; working with associate artists (or ensembles); staging and basic amplification; stage presence and presentation; performance anxiety management; and performance documentation processes.
You will investigate techniques of musical communication between artists and audiences during performance, assess contemporary and historical approaches to music performance, and develop an awareness of the requirements of different performance environments.
Prior experience in musical performance is needed to complete this unit. You must be able to perform to the equivalent standard of AMEB 5 Grade.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- identify and analyse musical performance workflows and stagecrafts;
- apply musical performance workflow techniques to their own musical performance practices;
- demonstrate fundamental performance presence and presentation skills; and
- examine the development of musical performance styles and conventions and document how their own performance practices fit into these genres and traditions.
