Unit information
Morphology and syntax is the study of word and sentence structure. In this unit, you will build on your foundational linguistic knowledge of morphology and syntax, and learn to dissect and describe the components of words and sentences in a variety of world languages.
You will recognise which features are common across world languages, while also appreciating how individual languages may be simultaneously ‘typical’ and ‘atyipcal’ in how they piece together their words and sentences. Equipped with sophisticated analytical techniques, you will focus on analysing field data from various languages and solving problems based on them.
If you are an ESL teacher, a data scientist involved in PoS tagging, or working and living in multilingual environments, this unit will be of great interest to you.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of the major types of morphological and syntactic phenomena found among the languages of the world;
- demonstrate coherent understanding of how morphological and syntactic data in any language can be approached using the techniques of contemporary descriptive grammar;
- develop critical thinking and judgement in undertaking morphological and syntactic analysis;
- provide clear explanations of morphological and syntactic phenomena to others;
- apply the knowledge gained here to new linguistic contexts and in professional practice situations; and
- demonstrate responsibility and autonomy in individual and/or collaborative work tasks.
