Enhance your knowledge and understanding of French culture with this French culture unit.
This advanced unit introduces you to themes modernity in French literature and visual culture of the nineteenth century.
Through close textual and visual analysis of the prescribed works, you will extend your competency in reading and writing French to a highly advanced level.
You will explore what it meant to be modern during this century of fast-paced change: what constituted a work of fiction in this context? How did artists find new ways to engage and depict the world in front of them? What were the links between artists and the literary movements at the time? With its research-led teaching, the unit provides you with an overview of a key period in French literature and culture, its literary and artistic movements, and their scholarly reception.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply advanced-level language (French language specialists only) and research skills to the reading of French and/or Francophone texts;
- critically analyse selected French literary and visual works;
- critically analyse and evaluate modern French literature and visual works in terms of their socio-cultural and historical context;
- critically analyse modern French texts and artworks with reference to their representational modes and representational aims;
- demonstrate competence and accuracy in writing about complex aesthetic, historical, and cultural issues relating to modern French works; and
- independently research literary and art-historical scholarship and draw on this to frame an argument in relation to literary and visual materials.
