Unit information
The ‘short twentieth century’ represents a non-linear and unpredictable period of European history, when the three great ideologies of liberal democracy, fascism and communism struggled for mastery of the continent.
In this unit you will examine the circumstances leading up to, and consequences of, major instances of turmoil and transition in 20th and early 21st century Europe.
You will explore the period beginning with the First World War and the Russian Revolutions of 1917 which saw the emergence of Fascism in Italy and Germany, and the Spanish Civil War, before moving on to the origins and outcomes of the WWII and the Cold War in Europe.
The postwar situation in Western and Eastern Europe is then followed by examining the collapse of Soviet and European communism, and post-communist conditions since 1990.
This unit complements the knowledge gained in HIST111, HIST113 and HIST357 but can also be studied as a standalone unit.

There are two options for Assessment 2 and Assessment 3.
Students who choose to complete Assessment 2 Option A must complete Assessment 3 Option A.
Students who choose to complete Assessment 2 Option B must complete Assessment 3 Option B.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- display knowledge and understanding of the course of Modern European history, with particular reference to the period and case studies discussed;
- display knowledge and understanding of the emergence of modern ideologies, and the causes and outcomes of wars and revolutions in Modern Europe, as well as imperatives for peace and cooperation;
- be able to interpret and evaluate a variety of documentary historical sources;
- appreciate and analyse aspects of historical debate in secondary sources;
- identify, engage with, and analyse historical questions through properly constructed, referenced, and expressed assessment tasks; and
- communicate effectively their understanding of various issues and topics related to the history of Modern Europe.
